An oil on canvas painting by Edward Hicks (American, 1780-1849), titled Penn’s Treaty, sold for $2.55 million at a sale of Important American Furniture, Folk Arts & Prints held January 25 by Christie’s in New York City. Also, an important Chippendale carved mahogany block-and-shell bureau table, signed by John Townsend (Newport, circa 1770), brought $2.21 million; a Queen Anne carved mahogany tea table (Boston, circa 1740-1760) made $962,500; and a Federal girandole clock signed Lemuel Curtis hit $578,500. Prices include a 12 percent buyer’s premium.
