Mood Indigo: Textiles from Around the World
On Exhibit Through October 9, 2016
The Seattle Asian Art Museum – Seattle, WA
This summer, the Seattle Asian Art Museum celebrates a color rich with history in the exhibition Mood Indigo: Textiles from Around the World. Drawn primarily from the Museum’s textile collection, the exhibit illuminates the global scope of this vibrant dye.
Indigo is a familiar color throughout textile history. The Chinese counted it as a color of leadership, and their highest officials wore indigo embroideries. Japanese and African artisans prized indigo as a durable color. In America, to wear a “blue collar”  symbolizes both socioeconomic status and an outlook on life. This exhibition honors the unique ability of the color blue to create many moods in cloth. Drawn primarily from SAM’s global textile collection, the show features over 100 works, from resist-dyed cloths from Indonesia to kimonos.  A recently conserved set of Belgian tapestries depicting three
continents anchors the show, reflecting the ways in which indigo unites cultures and eras.

Clothing, ritual objects, and decorative objects each convey how techniques in dying and manipulating color has evolved. To bring indigo up to the present, a wall quilt by contemporary American artist Anissa Mack combines the most common blue of all – the denim now worn world-wide – with a shape inspired by the famous opening title sequence from Star Wars.
Mood Indigo: Textiles from Around the World runs through October 9th, 2016 at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Seattle, Washington. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and open until 9 p.m. on Thursday. Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for seniors and military, $5 for students and teens 13-17, and free for children.
