By Deborah Abernethy and Mike McLeod
$355 (30 bids, 14 bidders): Victorian 6-Panel KPM Porcelain Lithophane Lampshade.
Five of the six lithophane panels in this antique Victorian lampshade measures 4 7/8” wide by 5 ¾” tall and are signed KPM. The sixth panel is antique, but is not signed. We have posted close up photographs with a light behind each perfect panel and you can see that they all depict beautiful Victorian ladies. The solid brass octagon shade measures 7” tall x 9” across. When they added the sixth panel they altered the frame because the panel is slightly smaller. They then altered the three piece spider at the top so that one bar is shorter than the other two. You can see that this shade is not a perfect octagon. There are no other problems or restorations to this Victorian KPM lithophane lampshade.

DBA: A lithophane is an etched or molded artwork in translucent porcelain that when back lit can be seen very clearly and appears three dimensional. This is a highly decorative and desirable lithophane, nicer than most. The buyer got a good deal as these have more detail than ones I have seen selling for even more money.

$9,212 (28 bids, 11 bidders): Micro-mosaic and Porphyry Snuff Box w/Ducks Trinket Box.
The lower box rim has come loose and needs to be reattached. Wear consistent with age. About 3 inches in diameter.

DBA: The micro-mosaic technique uses solid color glass rods arranged in cross sections to form a pattern. Another word for this is millefiori. These cross sections are inlaid on a brass box. The technique is stunning and labor intensive. No information has been provided as to the maker or any signatures. These boxes can sell at auction for $100,000, but there is always accompanying information as to who made it and where it was made.
$1,692 (39 bids, 15 bidders): Antique Silver Glass Perfume Bottle, Monocular Spyglass, Miniature Telescope.
This is for a fabulous and very rare little antique Georgian perfume bottle and monocular combination from the early 1800s. These little combinations are extremely hard to find now. They were made during the golden age of the novelty spyglass in the early 1800s and were used, to begin with, as a utility object. But as with other daily objects, then and now, they became very fashionable, in this case by the high society here, the “Incroyables” or Incredibles in France, and probably any well to do in Europe. You would guess they were used mainly by ladies for showing off and spying on others at the theatre or ball.
The crystal-clear, cut glass bottle is circular with the miniature gilded brass telescope mounted in the centre. The telescope pulls out on three draws to focus; it works, and it is clear. The bottle has the original glass stopper and the original silver screw on lid. The lid has an integral suspension link for hanging to a chatelaine, and the link is stamped with makers’ marks. It is in excellent condition with no cracks in the glass, no dents in the metals, and it displays beautifully. It measures 35mm (1.3 inches) in diameter by 15mm (0.5 inches) deep by 55mm (2 inches) tall.

DBA: There are a few of these around, and this is about the going rate for the object. Just beware – China is making new copies of this form, and while side by side you can tell which is antique, you may not be able to tell by a photograph if buying online.
$191 (18 bids, 15 bidders): Vintage Japan K&O 1958 Metal Johnson Super Seahorse 50 Toy Boat Outboard Motor.
Battery-operated, it measures 5 1/2 inches tall and is in tested working condition. The motor has use wear as can be seen, but it still looks pretty good and retains its decals. It has some paint touch-up on the one side of the gold towards the rear. Overall, still a nice and a little more unusual K&O motor.

DBA: While this seems to be an unusual object, many of these could be found selling at auction for a similar price.
