A marine painting titled A.G. Lawson by James Bard (American, 1815–1897) sold for $177,800 at Christie’s. Bard, one of America’s foremost 19th-century maritime artists, was celebrated for his meticulously detailed portraits of steamships and sailing vessels. The painting’s strong result reflected continued demand for important American marine art and works depicting historically significant vessels. Also, the Bernard-Robb family classical parcel-gilt paint-decorated poplar and maple Grecian couch realized $190,500.
