Bonhams Returns to Asia Week New York with Three September Sales
Highlights include a rare Zitan Luohan bed, Katsushika Hokusai’s “Red Fuji,” and works by Zhang Daqian across three live auctions at 111 West 57th Street.
New York, NY — September 2026 — Bonhams returns to Asia Week New York this September with three live sales at its flagship galleries at 111 West 57th Street, spanning Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art on September 14, Fine Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy on September 15, and Fine Japanese and Korean Art on September 16. Two additional online sales complement the live program.
The September 14 Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale is led by a rare and splendid Zitan Lotus Luohan bed and kang table from the 18th or 19th century, estimated at $600,000-900,000, with provenance to the collector Lai Loy (1926-2012). A magnificent gilt-copper-alloy glass-embellished elephant stand from the Qianlong/Jiaqing period is estimated at $150,000-250,000. Further highlights include a rare turquoise-ground puce-enameled Dragon altar vase in gu form, bearing a Qianlong six-character mark and of the period, estimated at $40,000-60,000; a fine and rare white-overlay pink glass Ox and Cart snuff bottle by Li Junting, dated spring 1821 with the seal mark Wei Zhi, estimated at $40,000-60,000; and a white jade Quails and Millet vase and cover from the 18th century, also estimated at $40,000-60,000.
The September 15 Fine Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sale presents Zhang Daqian’s blue-and-green landscape dated 1945, estimated at $60,000-90,000. Liu Dan (b. 1953) is represented by Single Pinwheel, estimated at $45,000-75,000, and Ink Daffodil 1, estimated at $22,500-47,500. Additional highlights include a Portrait of a Court Lady in Winter Robe from the Qianlong period, mid-18th century, in the manner of Jean Denis Attiret (Wang Zhicheng), estimated at $40,000-60,000; a late 18th or early 19th century handscroll of Tao Ye Tu (Illustrations of Porcelain Manufacture), after Sun Hu, Ding Guanpeng, and Zhou Kun, estimated at $40,000-60,000; and Silent Expanse by Mu Xin (1927-2011), from the collection of C.C. Wang, estimated at $20,000-40,000.
The September 16 Fine Japanese and Korean Art sale is led by Katsushika Hokusai’s Gaifu kaisei (“Red Fuji”), from the celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series, estimated at $150,000-250,000, and Utagawa Hiroshige’s Kameido Umeyashiki (Plum Estate, Kameido) from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, estimated at $75,000-95,000. A massive cloisonne-enamel plaque by Namikawa Sosuke for the Shippo Gaisha, Meiji period, is estimated at $50,000-70,000. A 15th-century Buncheong jar with fish design is estimated at $30,000-50,000, and a large Meiji porcelain vase by Makuzu (Miyagawa) Kozan is estimated at $20,000-30,000.
