Bonhams to Auction Legacy Cellar of Burgundy Authority Dr. Remington Norman

Bonhams Wine and Spirits will offer The Cellar of Dr. Remington Norman: The Legacy of a Pioneering Wine Writer, an online auction running September 15-29, 2026, closing on September 29 from 10am BST via Bonhams.com. The collection draws from the personal cellar of Dr. Remington Norman, one of the most respected authorities on the wines of Burgundy and the Rhone Valley, assembled over a lifetime of scholarship, commerce and tasting.
Educated at Harrow and Oxford University, where he later taught, Dr. Norman built his early reputation as a London wine merchant and was the driving force behind the pioneering La Reserve wine shops, which served as a training ground for many of today’s leading wine trade professionals. His acclaimed book The Great Domaines of Burgundy, first published in 1992, remains a seminal reference on the producers of the Cote d’Or, while Rhone Renaissance earned an unprecedented sweep of Britain’s major wine literary awards. In 1984, Dr. Norman became a Master of Wine and subsequently joined the Academie Internationale du Vin, lecturing and conducting tastings across Europe, North America, Australasia and South Africa.
The wines offered reflect Dr. Norman’s exacting standards, with the collection focusing on Burgundy and the Rhone, the two regions with which his name has long been synonymous. All bottles were stored since purchase in an eighteenth-century cellar in the English countryside and have been transferred by Bonhams specialists to LCB Dinton, where they are held duty paid and ready for delivery to successful buyers. Among the sale highlights are a case of Chateau Rayas Pignan, Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1978 (12 x 750ml), estimated at 12,000-18,000 pounds sterling; a single bottle of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Hermitage Cuvee Cathelin 1990, estimated at 7,000-10,000 pounds sterling; a bottle of Henri Jayer, Echezeaux 1988, Cote de Nuits, estimated at 6,000-8,000 pounds sterling; and a magnum of Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin-Clos de Beze 2005, estimated at 4,800-6,000 pounds sterling.
