Brunk Auctions of Asheville, North Carolina, has opened three significant online auctions for bidding, with sale dates spanning September 23, September 24, and October 29. Together, the sales present an exceptional breadth of American and Southern material, British and Continental works, and the distinguished collection formed over decades by Richard and Shirley Roberts of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The American and Southern sale, opening September 23 at 10:00 a.m. EST, leads with an important Maurice Brazil Prendergast watercolor alongside paintings by Kahn, Jacobsen, Redmond, Marin, Glackens, and Koch. Furniture highlights include the Kittredge Family high chest, a Dunlap family high chest, a Nathan Lombard sideboard, a Seymour work table, and a MESDA-documented Petersburg, Virginia, secretary. Additional offerings include a rare Virginia paint-decorated blanket chest, a Soap Hollow blanket chest, clocks by Samuel Mulliken and Anna Atkinson, a Joseph Proctor folk art still life, a significant Fraktur collection, a Dave Drake-attributed Edgefield stoneware jar dated 1839, first editions by Mark Twain and Frederick Douglass, and a Philadelphia Chippendale carved mahogany easy chair with Winterthur provenance.
The British and Continental sale follows on September 24 at 10:00 a.m. EST, featuring important prints by Rembrandt, Whistler, and Durer, rare watercolors by Annabella Telfair and Captain Thomas Davies, portraits by Jurgen Ovens, Meissen porcelain from the Lake Lure, North Carolina, estate of Steve Stewart, English silver by Paul Storr, and a pair of Late Regency Cary’s 12-Inch New Terrestrial and Celestial Globes dated 1816. The Roberts estate sale on October 29 at 10:15 a.m. EST presents a world-class assembly of American furniture from major centers including Boston, Portsmouth, Newport, Philadelphia, and Charleston, acquired through dealers Israel Sack, Liverant and Son, Deanne Levison, Arader, and Shrubsole. Paintings by Childe Hassam, Jane Peterson, J.C. Beckwith, Willard Metcalf, and Edmund Tarbell are offered alongside silver by John Ewan and John Carter, early Chinese export porcelain, an extremely rare John Townsend-labeled Newport Chippendale Pembroke table, a pair of John Goddard-attributed Newport Chippendale side chairs, a Charleston Queen Anne mahogany dressing table with Levison and Cullen provenance, and a Georg Dionysius Ehret Virginia botanical.
