A baseball-themed painting by artist Norman Rockwell that appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1949, originally thought to be a signed copy but then turned out to be an original, sold for $1.68 million at a Platinum Night Sports Auction held Aug. 19-20 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Tex. Also, Lou Gehrig’s 1937 New York Yankees home pinstriped jersey hit $870,000; Mickey Mantle’s 1954 jersey made $432,000; and a bat used by Babe Ruth made $408,000. Prices are inclusive of the buyer’s premium.
