A first-edition four-volume set of John Marshall’s Life of George Washington, published in 1804, sold for $1,025 at a Schilb Antiquarian Rare Books auction held in Columbia, MO. Written by the fourth Chief Justice of the United States and a close contemporary of Washington, the landmark biography remains one of the most important early accounts of the nation’s first president. Also, a first-edition copy of Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad, published in 1869, realized $660.
