Crescent City Auction Gallery to Conduct Important September Estates Auction, Sept. 10-11

Top lots include paintings by George Rodrigue and Hunt Slonem, a stainless-steel Rolex, and a Moroles granite sculpture

New Orleans, LA — September 2026 — An original oil painting by Louisiana legend George Rodrigue, estimated at $30,000-$50,000, leads a two-session Important Estates Auction at Crescent City Auction Gallery on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 10-11, online and live at 1330 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans.

The auction opens at 10am Central Time both days and spans more than 725 lots drawn from the Bourbon Street estate of New Orleans hotelier Joe Jaeger, Jr.; the collection of author and interior designer Rosemary James; and other regional estates. Categories include French, English, and American furniture; paintings and watercolors; sculptures; garden figures; mirrors; and decorative arts.

Rodrigue’s Two Oaks Near the Broussard Farm (1989), an oil on canvas board, carries a pre-sale estimate of $30,000-$50,000. Known first for his Louisiana landscape paintings, Rodrigue later gained worldwide fame in the mid-1990s with his Blue Dog series, drawn from the Cajun legend of the Rougarou.

Hunt Slonem’s Bayou Teche, an oil on canvas, is estimated at $7,000-$10,000. Slonem, a Neo-Expressionist painter, sculptor, and printmaker, is celebrated for large-scale works featuring butterflies, bunnies, and tropical birds. His work is represented in museum collections worldwide.

Among the watches and jewelry, a men’s stainless-steel and 18K yellow gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual wristwatch (1974) is estimated at $1,200-$1,800, while a Cartier Santos 100 medium wristwatch (2004-2008) carries an estimate of $2,500-$4,500.

Sculpture highlights include an untitled granite work by Jesus Bautista Moroles (Texas, 1950-2015), estimated at $5,000-$8,000, and a French alabaster carved sculpture of Napoleon (late 19th/early 20th century), estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Notable works by other Louisiana and regional artists include an oil and mixed media diptych on wood panels by William Hemmerling (Louisiana, 1943-2009), I’ll Fly Away (2007), estimated at $6,000-$9,000; a silver leaf and yellow clay on wood by George Bauer Dunbar (Louisiana, 1927-2024), Heart, estimated at $5,000-$8,000; and an oil on canvas by Melissa Bonin (Louisiana, b. 1960), Night Moves (2008), estimated at $4,000-$6,000. Additional paintings include works by James Michalopoulos, Alexander John Drysdale, Joe Moran, Steele Burden, David Harouni, and Anne-Francoise Couloumy.

French furniture offerings include a late 19th century French Renaissance Revival highly carved walnut buffet a deux corps (estimated at $1,500-$2,500) and a pair of late 20th century French-style ormolu-mounted marble-top boule commodes (estimated at $2,000-$4,000). Decorative highlights include a pair of mid-to-late 20th century Egyptian Revival style slate-top patinated bronze pier tables (estimated at $1,500-$2,500) and a large late 19th century French Belle Epoque carved giltwood mirror (estimated at $1,500-$2,500).
