A. Elmer Crowell duck decoy, $570,000, Guyette & Deeter

A wood duck decoy by A. Elmer Crowell sold for $570,000 at a Guyette & Deeter sale held July 24-25, with provenance to the Tony Waring and Jim/Diane Cook collections. The decoy’s slightly turned head and finely relief-carved tail feathers exemplified Crowell’s reputation as the preeminent American decoy carver. Thirteen decoys in the sale each topped $100,000, for a combined total near $2.1 million. Also, a Joseph Lincoln long-tail duck decoy, rigmate to a record-setting Lincoln wood duck sold that April, realized $330,000.
