Gavels ‘n’ Paddles Recent Auction Results From Near & Far By Ken Hall Jean de Bologna bronze, $82,950, Clars Auction
A 19th century after bronze sculpture by Jean de (Giovanni da) Bologna (It., 1529-1608), titled The Rape of the Sabine Women, sold for $82,950 at an auction held Nov. 11 by Clars Auction Gallery in Oakland, Calif. It was a new world auction record for an after bronze by the artist. Also, a painting by Swiss artist Rudolf Johann Weisse (1846-1933), titled A Moment of Prayer, breezed to $82,955 (also a record); and a painted steel sculpture by James Rosati (Am., 1911-1988), titled Big Red (1963), brought $24,885. Prices include a 19 percent buyer’s premium.
