Ken’s Korner: Photograph of town’s namesake discovered

Donald Carapella of Corning, N.Y., likes to collect, research and study old photographs. Recently, he participated in an online auction and purchased a group of old photos. While rummaging through them, he saw one with the name “Edwin Moore” written on it, along with the photographer’s name and “Edmore, Michigan” written on it, too. This piqued his interest and he did a little digging, only to discover the town of Edmore was actually named after the man in the photo, Edwin Moore. But Carapella didn’t stop there.

He contacted the Pine Forest Historical Museum in Edmore and was stunned to learn they had no photo of Mr. Moore and were unaware that one even existed. A picture of a painting of Moore in a book was all museum officials had to go by, as an educated guess as to what Moore may have looked like. Carapella very generously offered to sell the 19th century photo to the museum for far less than he probably could have gotten for it. “It gave me great satisfaction to know Mr. Moore is home where he belongs,” Carapella said.
