The Civil War Collector continued from page 43
Q: Hello, John, I have what I believe to be a Civil War dog tag belonging Elijah Devore’s dog tag marked,
to a Union soldier named Eli Devor from Pennsylvania. I did a quick “Eli Devor, 1st Brig 2 Div. 1 A.C.,”
background, and it appears he died on June 18, 1864, during the Siege of $800-$1,200.
Petersburg at age 19. I couldn’t find anything particularly interesting but
only searched briefly. The tag is about the same size as a quarter and is
lightweight. Maybe pewter?
I did read another question you answered regarding dog tags and their
value. So is this a dog tag? You also mentioned ephemeral or token auctions.
Thank you for any help you can give me.
JS: Your silver T-bar ID badge or 1st Corps badge was a commercial badge
sold early in the Civil War. Elijah Devore, 22 years old, enlisted 10-18-
1861 at Camp McClellan, Davenport, Iowa, into Company A, 13th Iowa
Infantry, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Army Corps.
There were actually three Eli Devors in the Civil War, but only one who
served in the units listed on the badge. “Your” Elijah Devore served during
the entire war and was one of the seven men who were not injured
out of the 60 in his company at the Battle of Atlanta, July 20-21, 1864.
He mustered out 7-21-1865 in Louisville, KY.
The badge is missing a pin on the back; even so, its presale auction
market range is $800 to $1,200. Not having the regiment name on it
detracts from its value.
