Dickens book collection, $70,800, Waverly Rare Books
Gavels n Paddles Recent Auction Results from Near and Far By Ken Hall A collection of 30 leather-bound books comprising the “Works of Charles Dickens,” featuring Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and others, sold for $70,800 at an auction held December 6 by Waverly Rare Books in Falls Church, Virginia. The 1861-1863 Library Edition was inscribed in blue ink on the titled page of Volume I (The Pickwick Papers) in Dickens’ hand: “To Jas. Blair, R.N./This set of my books/Charles Dickens/The New Year, 1863.” The set sold for 17 times the high estimate and the price included an 18 percent buyer’s premium.
