Auction Items Worth a Look

Signed Danny Lyon Photograph
Heritage Auctions February Online Photographs Auction: Danny Lyon photograph, Benny at Grand and Division, 1956. Gelatin silver, 2000 16-3/4 x 11-1/2 inches (42.5 x 29.2 cm). Signed and dated in pencil with the printer’s stamp on verso. The work of famed photographer Danny Lyon (American, b. 1942) is in the style of photographic New Journalism, in which he became immersed in the subject. Among his early work was a study of outlaw motorcyclists in the collection “The Bikeriders” (1968), where Lyon did more than just photograph motorcyclists in the American Midwest from 1963 to 1967. Additionally, he also became a member of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club and traveled with them, sharing their lifestyle. According to Lyon himself, the photographs were “an attempt to record and glorify the life of the American bikerider.”

Early Paint Decorated Pine Country Cupboard
Thomaston Place Auction Galleries Winter Auction Weekend February 16-18: Red and Ochre Grain-Painted Pine Stepback Cupboard, having a flat molded cornice, two molded inset panel doors over three shelves, with mushroom knobs, surface mounted flap hinges and wooden thumb-turn closure. Plank ledge has molding above and below, matching doors below, matching panels on the sides, lower molding above plain foot. 41 1/2″ to ledge, 77″ (6′-5″) overall, 50 1/2″ x 22 1/2″. Wonderful age and use wear and patina.

Hal Hunt Auctions American Antique Museum Collection Auction – February 24: Rare, ebonized Renaissance Parlor Credenza, with exotic inlays, signed by the famous New York Cabinet maker – Herter Brothers.

Adolf Hitler’s Desk and Chair
Milestone Auctions – Historic Military & Firearms event, January 27: Adolf Hitler’s Desk and Chair from his Munich residence Prinzregentenplatz 16/II. A gift from Mrs. Elsa Bruckmann, “Romanian Princess Cantacuzene,” in 1929. The rectangular desk is made of massive oak and has a leather writing surface inset into the center. There is a drawer on each side with each latch inscribed with the makers name M. Ballin. Below are two doors, behind the right hand door there are three drawers. Behind the left hand door is empty but shows evidence of separators at one time.

There is an iron plate screwed to the bottom for a safe. Each door has hammered iron handles with rings. The desk and chair are all original condition, showing normal patina from age and use. The matching desk chair is made of oak with brown leather seat and backing. The chair shows normal patina from age and use. Both desk and chair bear the manufacturer’s labels “Mobelfabrik M. Ballin Kontor Und Verkaufsraume Promenadepl 7” and typed above is “Kontor A. Hitler. Prinzregentenpl 11/16 2 Nov 1929”. Desk measures 56″ Wide x 31″ Deep x 31″ Tall and Chair measures 31″ Tall x 24″ Wide. Provenance: Hermann Historica 2003.

French Lady Doll – Theriault’s Bijoux Auction
This extremely rare doll hammered down at $330,500 with 15% buyer’s premium against an estimate of $80,000 – $120000. Winning bid was achieved for the Barry Art Museum of Norfolk where the doll will hold a special place of honor when the museum opens in 2018.
