Ken’s Korner: Painting bought in ‘48 for $62.50 brings $3M+ – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – March 2006
A painting that an Illinois schoolteacher bought in 1948 for $62.50 has sold for more than $3 million at Christie’s in New York. Frank Holland, then the chair of the art department at North Shore High School in New Trier, Ill., purchased “Still Life With Flowers,” by Stuart Davis, at a U.S. State Department sale. Holland went on to become an art critic for the Chicago Sun-Times. He died in 1972. The painting had been in storage at the school for decades. It appraised in 1991 for $200,000.
