Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, $450.3 million, Christie’s

Leonardo da Vinci’s 500-year-old mystical masterpiece, Salvator Mundi, sold for $450.3 million at an auction held November 15th by Christie’s in New York City. It was a new auction record for any artwork ever sold at auction. Fewer than 20 paintings by Leonardo are known to exist and all (except for this one) are in museum collectors. The oil on panel, done around 1500, depicts Christ as Savior of the World, dressed in flowing robes and holding a crystal orb in his left hand. The price includes the buyer’s premium.
