The extraordinary “Estrela de Fura 55.22”—a 55.22-carat Mozambique ruby—sold for $34.8 million at a Magnificent Jewels auction held June 8th by Sotheby’s in New York City. It was a new world auction record for a ruby and a record for any colored gemstone ever sold at auction. Moments later, “The Eternal Pink”—the most vivid pink diamond to ever come to market—also achieved $34.8 million. It was a world auction record price for a fancy purplish-pink diamond.
