Ken’s Korner: King Kong collectibles hot (if you can find ‘em) – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – March 2006
Memorabilia from the original 1933 movie “[amazon_link id=”B001KVZ6LQ” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]King Kong[/amazon_link]” was hot long before the recent [amazon_link id=”B001KZVQJI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Peter Jackson remake[/amazon_link]. An original poster from the film in mint condition can easily command six figures. The world record for an original “King Kong” poster was achieved at Sotheby’s in 1999 for $244,500. The iconic poster, depicting Kong crushing an airplane, was in perfect condition and measured 41” x 81”. Even lobby cards are coveted.
One example was sold at Christie’s in 1997 for over $4,000. Posters from the subsequent re-releases of the film, the spin-off movies (such as “[amazon_link id=”B000P24FAE” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]King Kong vs. Godzilla[/amazon_link]”) and even the widely panned [amazon_link id=”B000B8I9YK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]1976 remake starring Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange[/amazon_link] are in demand, too. And foreign-language “Kong” memorabilia can fetch jaw-dropping prices. The French version of the Josef Fenneker design of Kong hovering over the New York skyline brought $14,000 at auction. Will memorabilia from the new “King Kong” be valuable someday? Could be!
