A $2.2 million expedition led by the International Group for Historical Aircraft Recovery has failed in its attempt to find Amelia Earhart’s downed plane or evidence of her remains. The group focused its search on Gardner Island (now Nikumaroro), in the central Pacific Ocean. TIGHAR believes Amelia Earhart’s plane may have landed on the island, and that she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, may have survived for several months there. Another voyage is planned for next year. Earhart and Noonan’s plane went down in July 1937.
