Ken’s Korner: Author pledges $500K to study Confederate sub – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – June 2006
Best-selling crime author Patricia Cornwell has pledged $500,000 to help researchers solve the mystery of the sinking of the Confederate submarine Hunley. Cornwell told the Associated Press, “This is a crime scene and you are doing an autopsy on that submarine.” The Hunley, with a crew of eight men working a hand-crank, rammed a spar with black powder into the Union blockade ship Housatonic off Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 17,1864. The sub was raised in 2000 and is being studied.
