Ken’s Korner: Book examines ads from the heady ‘80s – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – February 2006
A book titled “[amazon_link id=”B0037KMYLI” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]80s: All American Ads[/amazon_link]” (Taschen, $39.99) is a pop-culture history course for people too young to know what a Sony BetaMax or electric typewriter are, or are old enough to know but want to stroll down memory lane. The 600-page tome includes ‘80s printsads for things like a VW pickup truck, Zena jeans, portable (but clunky) phones, Kellogg Marshmallow Krispies, the Apple III computer (with up to 128K RAM!) and the chance to call England for just $1.25 a minute.
Linda Evans, star of the TV show “Dynasty,” is seen modeling a white suit from Nolan Miller’s Dynasty Collection. Nothing comes between Brooke Shields and her Calvin Kleins. Orson Welles tells us with steely resolve that Paul Masson “will sell no wine before its time.” The movie “[amazon_link id=”B001MWUWU8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Howard the Duck[/amazon_link]” is promoted, as are Digits finger watches. “[amazon_link id=”B00066J4PU” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Jane Fonda’s Workout[/amazon_link]” is every fitness buff’s must-have video, while a boyish Bill Gates praises the [amazon_link id=”B002JX67H6″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Wall Street Journal[/amazon_link] as “user-friendly.”
