Shabby storage is causing millions of rare artifacts in museums and libraries across the U.S. to disintegrate, according to a study conducted by the Heritage Preservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. The report looked at conditions in over 3,000 museums, libaries and archives and found that many lack the basic environment controls that prevent photos from losing color, keep rare books from crumbling and protect military uniforms from being destroyed by insects.
