Ken’s Korner: Hawaiian group buries 83 artifacts, won’t say where – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – May 2006
A Hawaiian group that says it has “a greater responsibility to our beliefs than to the federal government” won’t say where it has buried 83 artifacts it borrowed from a museum in 2000. The group, called Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawaii Nei, buried native artifacts including a human-hair wig, containers with human teeth and wooden statuettes, somewhere in the Kawaihae cave complex on the Big Island. Their executive director, Edward Halealoha Ayau, has been jailed for contempt.
