An unrestored copy of Batman #1 (DC Comics, spring 1940), graded 7.5 out of 10 for condition, sold for $237,300 at a sale of Comics, Comic Art & Sports Items held Feb. 15 by Philip Weiss Auctions in Lynbrook, N.Y. Also, a copy of Batman #2, summer 1940, graded 9.2, finished at $39,550; a copy of Adventure Comics #40, with the first appearance of Sandman, graded 6.5, realized $25,990; and a copy of Action Comics #23, with the first appearance of Lex Luthor, hammered for $20,905. Prices include a 13 percent buyer’s premium.
