A Gimbels Department Store version of Babe Ruth’s M101-4 rookie card sold for $762,500 at a Fine Books and Manuscripts auction held April 10th by Bonhams in New York. The card, one of the most sought-after trading cards, had a pre-sale estimate of $600,000. The consignor’s grandfather, who was 10 years old and living in Milwaukee at the time, acquired the card over a century ago during a 1916 Gimbels promotional giveaway of baseball cards featuring stars of the day.
