An original oil on tin painting by the German artist Charles C. Hofmann (1821-1882), titled Views of the Buildings and Surroundings of the Berks County Almshouse, sold to a phone bidder for $112,575 at an auction held Oct. 5-6 by Pook & Pook in Downingtown, Pa. The bird’s-eye view of the almshouse featured trees, figures, farm animals and several horse carriages surrounded by six vignettes of outbuildings. It is similar to another work by Hofmann at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The price includes a 17.5 percent buyer’s premium.
