Ken's Korner: Ken, sporting a makeover, is trying to win back Barbie

Ken’s Korner: Ken, sporting a makeover, is trying to win back Barbie – The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles – April 2006
Sales of Barbie dolls have been sagging lately, at least in the U.S. (down 18 percent in the fourth quarter of 2005), so maker Mattel has reintroduced Ken as a way of resparking interest in the line. Beach Fun Ken, who hit store shelves March 1st, has a youthful, buff and stylish look. And he is bent on winning back his plastic paramour, Barbie, who kicked him to the curb two years ago in favor of Blaine, her Aussie surfer boy-toy. That relationship has cooled, Mattel spin doctors report.
“Ken had some time to think it all over and he decided he needed a new look,” said Lauren Dougherty, a Mattel spokesperson. “A makeover was inevitable.” So much so that Mattel “hired” celebrity stylist Philip Bloch (who has styled such stars as Sandra Bulloch, Jim Carrey and Halle Berry) to find the look for Ken that would win his woman back. Barbie is intrigued by made-over Ken. “But we’ll have to stay tuned to see whether these two will get back together,” Dougherty said.
