A team of American researchers, led by Ron E. Tappy of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, has discovered a 3,000-year-old stone, on which is is written the oldest known version of the Hebrew alphabet. Debris above and below the stone confirm it dates to the 10th century B.C. The Hebrew alphabet is the precursor of all the alphabets used in the Middle East, as well as the modern English alphabet. The 22 letters were inscribed on the 38-pound stone in their proper order.
